How I Learned to Tolerate the Treadmill

With cooler temperatures and longer nights on their way, a lot of us are going to be taking our run indoors to the “dreadmills”.  There’s no other way to cut it.  Unless you’re a hamster, treadmills are boring.  While I’ll never enjoy it as much as the outdoors, I’ve learned to tolerate it with these tricks below.

Break it Up

I think a big mistake is assuming that running on a treadmill is the same as running outside.  Clocking 10 miles on the treadmill is mind-numbing.  Instead, it’s easier to go for 10-15 minutes and then get off to go do something else.  I usually head towards the free weights.  Rinse and repeat.

Vary What You’re Doing Every Minute

Pressing “quick start” does not a good workout make.  Every minute, switch things up.  A good plan of attack is to do a hill sandwich.  Start by doing some speedwork, push through a hill, then wrap it up with more speedwork.  The variance helps keep things interesting.

Tread With Others

If you’ve read the book Grit, you know that working out amongst others is a powerful motivational tool.  Sometimes, I just cannot get on the treadmill without some help.  Invest in a workout class that incorporates treadmills.  If you’re low on funds, run with your friend or take the treadmill next to the most ripped guy in the gym.  The key is to use others to motivate your workout.  It’s a weird psychological trick that actually works.
