With wedding season fast approaching, it’s only a matter of time before the Cha Cha Slide makes an (unwelcome) comeback. Let’s be real. There is nothing quite like seeing Nana seductively swaying and clapping along to that synthesized cha-cha beat.
Almost twenty years later, fitness YouTuber Dan Baldwin decided that enough is enough. Sure, the Cha Cha Slide sucks, but there’s a way to make it suck even more. All you need to do is add planks!
After taking a gander at Baldwin’s YouTube channel, he’s injected a lot of creativity by implementing his workouts within some classic line dances and popular songs. He has created challenges with The Cupid Shuffle, a step routine to Taylor Swift’s new single, and planked to Cotton Eyed Joe.
And you know what? I kind of love it. The gym can get redundant, and it’s abundantly clear this guy is trying to make it fun. Of all the line dances, the Cha Cha Slide is the one that I can tolerate the most, so I could see possibly trying this one out. Cotton Eyed Joe, however, will never happen.
For those unfamiliar with plank challenges, the challenge doesn’t mean you hold a plank for two minutes. Instead, you’re going to be adding those annoying commands throughout the song into your routine. And you do it for almost two minutes. It looks like a fun challenge (and a decent way to really get your abs sore).
For this fitness guru, all I can say is keep doing what you’re doing. Special request for a step challenge to Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus. By far, one of the most underrated and forgotten line dances of our time. I’m sure both I and Miley Cyrus will appreciate it.
